Top locations

Right now we have almost 300 available positions in over 50 Chinese cities! So whether you're looking to teach in the bustling cosmopolitan cities such Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou or experience the true beauty of China in cities such as Guilin or Dali, we can help to find the right job for you!

With a population of over 1,300,000,000 people and making up over 20% of the worlds population, China is a very large country indeed. In total, there are 22 provinces (each the size of a small country) giving teachers plenty of choice when choosing to find a teaching job in China. China's vast size gives you an amazing array of different landscapes, cultures, climates and even languages to choose from. Whilst the only recognized official language on mainland China is Mandarin Chinese, each individual city has it's own local dialect which varies greatly depending on where you go and even Chinese people from others cities can't understand what people are saying - Try learning some of that to really impress!

Everyone has heard the likes of Beijing & Shanghai and how amazing they are yet China has many other wonderful cities each having its own culture and unique character. We have teaching positions available in almost all Chinese provinces especially within the province capital city where cities are modernizing, expat communities are growing, western amenities are bursting and schools are crying out for teachers!

Each part of China has something different to offer, so you may want to teach in East China where the cities are mostly modernized and business is key to development. Perhaps you love the sunshine? (get your sunscreen ready!) Therefore Southern China would suit you better as the summers are long and the winters are mild. If you're wanting to be a bit off the beaten track and experience China for everything it has to offer then West / Central China is the way to go, you will be truly immersed in Chinese culture and you'll still have plenty of other expats within the area.

So whatever you're looking for when deciding to teach in China, we have the right location for you!

Regional differences

The East coast of China tends to have a higher level of development and is where most of the larger cities are located. As you venture West, except for the likes of Chongqing and Chengdu, the cities become smaller and less teachers are required in these locations. It's worth travelling around China to see what each region has to offer. The West of China is well known for stunning natural landscapes and its seriously spicy food (prepare to breathe fire when you try!) the South is renowned for business and it's where most of the large companies are based due to its close proximity to Hong Kong and on the East Coast we hope you like seafood as its plentiful and cheap, like, seriously cheap in some places!

Climate

Due to the size of China, climates vary quite considerably depending on the region. Generally speaking you'll find that the North is nice and pleasant in the summer but can and will get very cold in the winter (think Canada). Around mid China say around the same level as Shanghai, the summers will be hot with temperatures often in their 30's, the spring and autumn will become cooler but pleasat and then in the winter you'll find it will become colder but generally speaking doesn't drop below 0'c. Then you have the sub-tropical South with hot, sweaty long summers and cool mild winters.

We think all teachers should consider the climate of each city before choosing a place to teach English in China. After all, you're about to spend at least a year of your life here and we want you to enjoy it as much as possible as China rocks!

Low cost of living

Ever heard the saying 'as cheap as chips?' Well you'll get to live that for real if you choose to teach in China s the cost of living  is significantly lower than that of the west. Whilst salaries are different for all schools you'll find they always go a long way. Eating dinner at a local restaurant will typically cost between 15-30 RMB per person (roughly 2 – 4.50 US dollars) and most teachers find they can live easily on 100 RMB per day (15 USD) and pocket the rest. While the cost of living in large cities such as Shanghai and Beijing is higher than other areas in China it is still possible to shop and eat in cheaper areas. Check out our cost of living page for more info.

Saving Money

As all schools  offer a number of additional benefits as part of the compensation package, the salary a teach receives is pretty much all disposable income as there are very few expenses. The amount you save depends on your spending habits but its not uncommon to save around 30-50% of your total monthly salary - Certainly enough for a few cheeky trips abroad and / or pay back those annoying student loans!
